Changelog
What’s new in Sparebyte, newest first.
Sparebyte 0.4.0
BetaDuplicates, smarter Downloads, and auto-clean.
- Duplicates. Find files you have more than once in your folders, byte for byte. Sparebyte shows what each copy really frees (Finder copies often share their space), suggests one to keep, and moves the rest to the Trash with Undo.
- Old installers and old screenshots get their own cards in Cleanup, and downloads show where they came from.
- Auto-clean (Pro, off by default): once a week, old installers and screenshots go to the Trash, undoable from Cleanup.
- Coming from 0.3 or earlier? Install this version from the website once, then turn on Full Disk Access again. Your settings, history and license come with it.
Sparebyte 0.3.0
BetaRoomy is now Sparebyte. Same app, new name: your settings, scan history and Undo carry over, and updates keep arriving on their own.
Sparebyte 0.2.0
BetaThe first full build of the app, for private beta testers.
A new window with a sidebar
- Overview, Cleanup, Storage, Apps, Large files and Explore disk, one click apart.
- The toolbar shows when you last scanned, with a button to scan again.
Overview
- A disk bar with a health label, and “You can safely get back” with the biggest findings.
- Tiles for what grew this week (Pro), your biggest files and apps you don’t use.
- On first launch, one card explains Full Disk Access. Choose “Not now” and a quiet reminder stays in the sidebar.
Cleanup
- Filter by All, Safe or Review, search findings, and sort by size or name.
- When nothing safe is left, Cleanup says so and offers Undo instead of showing an empty list.
- On Free, a note shows how to clean by hand, and Clean opens the Pro sheet with your own number.
Storage and System Data
- Apple’s categories, but you can open each one. Documents is grouped by kind, plus code projects.
- System Data is split into named pieces, each with what you can do about it.
- Space macOS keeps to itself is shown as “Can’t be explained”, with why.
Large files and Explore disk
- Your biggest files with when you last opened them, filters, Quick Look and Reveal in Finder.
- Move files to the Trash (Pro), with a confirm sheet and a 7-day Undo that survives relaunch.
- A zoomable sunburst map with a synced folder list, including hidden folders. A Whole disk view with Full Disk Access.
- Only items that can actually be moved get a checkbox.
Apps
- The true size of every app: the app plus the data it keeps in your Library.
- Tabs for apps not used in 90+ days and for leftovers from apps you already deleted.
- The uninstaller moves the app and its data to the Trash, with one Undo for both. Clear an app’s caches on their own.
Menu bar, notifications and settings
- Free space in the menu bar, with a small panel. Closing the window keeps Sparebyte in the menu bar if you like.
- Launch at login starts Sparebyte in the menu bar only, without scanning.
- Notifications (Pro): low disk once per crossing, leftovers after you trash an app, and an optional weekly space check, off by default.
- Settings for launch at login, menu bar mode, the idle-project threshold, excluded folders and alerts.
- A gentle daily refresh, only on power while you’re away from the Mac.
Beta access
- Personal beta keys that turn on Pro for up to 2 Macs.
- A one-time question about sharing anonymous usage and crash reports, changeable in Settings.
- Send Feedback from the toolbar or Settings.
- Beta builds stop working on a set date.
Under the hood
- Scans read around 145,000 files a second while staying under 60 MB of memory in our tests.
- Every delete passes a hard block list: system folders, Keychains, Mail, Messages, Photos and git repositories are never touched.
Known limits are listed on the support page.
